Claremont Discourse Celebrates Constitution Day: Social Media & the First Amendment

Claremont Discourse Celebrates Constitution Day: Social Media & the First Amendment In-Person

In honor of Constitution Day (typically observed on September 17), The Claremont Colleges Library is hosting a Claremont Discourse panel discussion exploring social media and the First Amendment. The panel will examine how protected speech on these platforms can create tension with content moderation that seeks to prevent the broader social harm associated with hate speech and misinformation. Also discussed will be how government restrictions on social media and other forms of behavior can serve broader political agendas.

Panelists for this Constitution Day discussion include:

  • George Thomas, Burnet C. Wohlford Professor of American Political Institutions at Claremont McKenna College
  • Alexandra Sharp Lippman, Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Pomona College
  • Ambereen Dadabhoy, Associate Professor of Literature at Harvey Mudd College

While we are expecting a robust discussion among our panelists, general areas of discussion may include:

  • Social media users’ right to free speech
  • Proliferation of misinformation on social media
  • The ways in which how the platforms are built can influence conversations – from the algorithms to the company policies, including the prioritization, support and enforcement of these policies
  • Responsibility of the government and the platforms in mitigating social harm
  • Government regulations of social media platforms as well as the efficacy and impacts (both intended and unintended) of such regulations

In addition to this captivating First Amendment conversation, The Claremont Colleges Library will be providing *free* copies of the Constitution at the Library’s Main Services Desk all day, September 12 (while supplies last).

Claremont Discourse lectures are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided starting at 4 p.m.

Established in 1998, the Claremont Discourse lecture series is a forum for faculty at The Claremont Colleges to present current research, publications, and creative projects from a wide variety of disciplines.
