Claremont Discourse Presents Prof. Charlotte Chang

Claremont Discourse Presents Prof. Charlotte Chang In-Person

In honor of International Love Data Week 2023, you're invited to join us for a data-focused talk on Combining Social and Ecological Insights to Address Conservation Challenges with Dr. Charlotte Chang, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Analysis at Pomona College. Conservation is fundamentally about human behavior. Protecting biodiversity and mitigating climate change requires that stakeholders across different sectors and societies cooperate and take action. Dr. Chang’s work has used data science techniques ranging from the local scale — focused on interviewing resource users in tropical Asia — to the global scale of social media to elucidate the social, economic, and ecological factors that shape human interactions with nature. During this lecture, Dr. Chang will provide examples from China, India, and computational social media analyses to illustrate how social-ecological analyses can galvanize environmental conservation.

To further celebrate Love Data Week, this Claremont Discourse session will kick off with the announcement of the Library’s Love Data Week 2023 Poster Contest winners. Student posters are meant to embody Love Data Week’s 2023 theme to help inspire the use of data to bring about changes that matter, such as environmental change, policy change, social change, etc. The winning poster designs will be displayed in the Digital Scholarship Collaboratory.

Claremont Discourse lectures are free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided starting at 4 pm.

Established in 1998, the Claremont Discourse lecture series is a forum for faculty at The Claremont Colleges to present current research, publications, and creative projects from a wide variety of disciplines.
